Renowned actor and entrepreneur Rajesh Williams, who made his mark in hundreds of Tamil and Malayalam films as well as television serials, passed away in Chennai on Thursday, May 29. He was 75.

Beginning his acting journey in 1974, Rajesh enjoyed a prolific career spanning five decades. Known for his versatility, he portrayed both lead roles and character parts with equal finesse. Over the years, he became a familiar face to audiences, leaving a lasting impact on the Tamil and Malayalam entertainment industries.
His nephew confirmed to DT Next that Rajesh had complained of low blood pressure on Thursday morning and passed away en route to the hospital. He is survived by his daughter Divya and son Deepak, who made his acting debut in 2014. Rajesh’s wife, Joan Sylvia Vanathirayar, passed away in 2012.
Born in Mannargudi, Tiruvarur, to Williams Nattar and Lily Grace Mankondar, Rajesh began his professional life as a high school teacher from 1972 to 1979. He made his film debut with a minor role in Aval Oru Thodar Kathai (1974), but gained recognition as a lead actor with Kanni Paruvathile in 1979.
He went on to star in notable films such as Achamillai Achamillai (1984), directed by K. Balachander. Rajesh also found success on television, appearing in popular serials like Micro Thodargal – Azhukku Vetti and Karthigai Deepam. His final film appearance was in Sriram Raghavan’s Merry Christmas, where he played Yadhoom Uncle in the Tamil version, alongside Vijay Sethupathi and Katrina Kaif.
Apart from his acting career, Rajesh was a successful businessman, having built a prominent presence in Chennai’s hotel and real estate industries.
Tributes poured in from colleagues and fans following the news of his passing. Actress Radhika Sarathkumar expressed her grief on X (formerly Twitter):
“Deeply shocked and sudden to hear of #rajesh’s unexpected demise. Shared so many movies together and had a deep respect for his wide knowledge of cinema and life. He will be missed by family, friends, and the film fraternity. #RIP.”
Producer and author G. Dhananjayan also wrote:
“Very sad to read about the passing away of Actor #Rajesh sir, a fine actor and a respected person in the film industry. My heartfelt condolences to the family. Rest in peace, sir.”
Rajesh Williams will be remembered not only for his significant contributions to cinema but also for his warm presence and multifaceted legacy.
